Kintsugi

Right now, I’m feeling more broken than usual. Every time I move my head in a particular way, there’s a disconcerting feeling, as if the base of my skull is pivoting on a pinhead. In the manner of such unstable mechanical relationships, there is that sickening feeling that it might, at any moment, decide to detach itself from the rest of me. It’s REALLY painful and momentarily a very scary sensation. I continue smiling inanely and have to remind myself that this has happened thousands of times, without the worst happening. “Breathe in, slow …… breath out, relax……”

Some time ago, I discovered a concept that goes against the grain in our throw away society; where even people are discarded too easily, regarded as useless, economically unviable and unworthy of care and respect. Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese Art of taking broken pottery and piecing it together again with precious metals to create something even lovelier than before. It’s a wonderful metaphor for seeing the beauty in our own brokenness. And an all-important shift in perspective in the pervading political climate.

However, it’s no good ‘rushing things’, much as positive thinking evangelists might suggest. Effectively, turning shit into gold is not an easy process. It has to happen when we are ready and able. We get to catch up with our hopes and forgotten humanity, as we slowly start to pick up those pieces.

Just 24 hours without feeling safe enough to exercise, the walls start closing in and I’m back in agony as if the pain of nearly 20 years never left. Give me a few more days of this and the blog will need to be renamed The Cranky Cyclist. I’m craving alcohol or pain killers. And for once in a blue moon, I cave in and the fog comes down.
